Announcements and News

We are pleased to announce important changes in the editorial leadership of the Stochastic Processes and their Applications (SPA) journal. Thanks to the courtesy of Elsevier, we are able to share an exclusive interview with Eva Löcherbach, the new Editor-in-Chief, and Mathias Löwe, the outgoing Editor-in-Chief, now available on You Tube.

We encourage the Bernoulli Society community to watch the interview and learn more about the transition and future direction of SPA under its new leadership link.

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for the position of

Tenure Track Assistant Professor in "Statistics and Data Science",

to begin as soon as possible.  The position is a W2 fixed-term (6-year) tenure-track professorship with the possibility of promotion to a tenured W3 professorship.

The professorship will be assigned to the Department of Mathematics of the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology.  While all areas of specialization in the field will be considered, the successful candidate is expected to pursue an innovative research program focused on the development/analysis of modern statistical methodology.

Applications are to be submitted by 20 October 2024 via the TUM recruitment portal.  For full details of the call and instructions for how to apply, see https://portal.mytum.de/jobs/professuren/NewsArticle_20240827_144049 .

Giuseppe Cannizzaro has been awarded the 2024 Wolfgang Doeblin Prize.

This prestigious recognition highlights his exceptional contributions to the field of stochastic partial differential equations and his outstanding achievements in the application of these equations to non-equilibrium statistical physics. His work in this complex and significant area is truly commendable.

We wish him continued success and groundbreaking accomplishments in his future research endeavors!

Professor Giuseppe Cannizzaro will present a lecture at the 44th Conference on Stochastic Processes and their Applications, which will take place in Wrocław on July 14–18, 2025.

The Bernoulli Society’s Newbold Prize Committee invites nominations for the 2025 Ethel Newbold Prize. Established in 2014, this biennial prize honours the significant contributions of women to the field of statistics. The award, generously supported by Wiley, recognises excellence in statistics without regard to the gender of the recipient.

The Ethel Newbold Prize will be awarded to an outstanding early or mid-career scientist whose work demonstrates excellence in mathematical statistics or in research that links developments in a substantive field to new advances in statistics. The award consists of the prize amount of 2,500€ together with an award certificate. The recipient will also be invited to present a talk at the next Bernoulli-IMS World Congress, a Bernoulli-sponsored major conference, or the ISI World Statistics Congress.

The prize will only be awarded if the set of nominations includes candidates of both genders. Nominations should include a letter outlining the nominee's achievements and contributions and a recent curriculum vitae of the nominee.

In order to nominate someone, please send your nomination and any inquiries to Adrian Röllin at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The deadline for submissions is 30 November 2024. The winner will be announced in early 2025.

Along with the American Statistical Association (ASA), the International Biometric Society (IBS), the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), the Bernoulli Society has set up a new international statistics medal, commemorating the life and work of Sir David Cox.

The award, called the David Cox Medal for Statistics, will recognise researchers in the fields of statistical theory, methodology and applications whose work is original, with conceptual depth and novelty, and which moves the field or a substantive application area forward.

Sir David Cox, a pioneering statistical researcher who introduced numerous innovations, published his seminal paper on regression models at the age of 48. In memory of this, medals are to be given to mid-career researchers, with an age limit of 50 (with exceptions to be made for extenuating circumstances). Nominations will not be restricted to members of the awarding societies.

Bernoulli Society President Victor Panaretos remarked, “David Cox left his mark on our discipline, by way of his transformative research, his mentoring of young statisticians, and his committed service from numerous important posts–including as Bernoulli Society President. It is only fitting to celebrate his legacy with this new award, indeed an award that I believe has the potential to bring additional visibility to our field. I’m especially proud that this project was first conceived and initiated by the Bernoulli Society, and very pleased that it has garnered support from so many partner Societies.”

Awarded to three statisticians every three years, the prize will be decided by a selection committee representing all the involved societies, with a rotating chair.

Nominations are now open and will be closing on 31 October 2024.

Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award 2025

The Bernoulli Society welcomes applications to the New Researcher Award 2025. Each awardee shall deliver a talk at a special invited session during the 65th ISI World Statistics Congress to be held in The Hague from October 5-10, 2025, and will receive a funding up to 1000 EUR to offset travel and other expenses. Bernoulli News will publish their pictures and a paragraph about their work.

Eligible candidates are active researchers in Mathematical Statistics who obtained the PhD degree on or after June 15th, 2019, and who are regular members of the Bernoulli Society. An extension may be given to those having had disruptions after receiving the PhD, such as parenthood. Diversity among the awardees is one of the Society’s goals, and therefore women and members of under- represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Candidates should apply through the web form here and send the required documents to the e-mail address indicated in the form.

Deadline: June 15th, 2024

Bernoulli Society is excited to announce a call for proposals for hosting the European Meeting of Statisticians (EMS) in 2026, 2027 and 2029

Bernoulli announces a call for proposals for the European Meeting of Statisticians (EMS) 2026, 2027 and 2029. The European Meetings of Statisticians are central events for statistics and probability in Europe and worldwide. The meetings should be the natural forum where all European statisticians and probabilists meet to exchange ideas and learn about the latest scientific developments. The EMS is typically held in June or July at a time of year that helps maximize attendance, although timing may vary depending on the local circumstances of the chosen venue. The venue should be a location accessible to a large proportion of Bernoulli membership and European researchers.

Anyone interested in hosting either EMS 2026, EMS 2027 or EMS 2029 should contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  who can provide detailed information for guidance on what is required. Pre-proposals to host EMS 2026 are encouraged to be sent by June 15, 2024 and will receive prompt feedback. Proposals are expected to be finalized by July 31, 2024.

The Wolfgang Doeblin Prize, which was founded in 2011 and is generously sponsored by Springer, is awarded biannually to a single individual who is in the beginning of his or her mathematical career, for outstanding research in the field of probability theory.  Nominees should normally be within 10 (calendar) years from getting their PhD to the prize year with suitable adjustments to be made for career breaks post-PhD (for example, maternity/paternity leave or military service).

The awardee will be invited to submit to the journal Probability Theory and Related Fields a paper for publication as the Wolfgang Doeblin Prize Article, and will also be invited to present the Doeblin Prize Lecture at a Conference on Stochastic Processes and their Applications.

To nominate a candidate, please provide the following documents:

  1. A comprehensive two-page Curriculum Vitae (CV) highlighting the nominee's academic background, professional experience, and honors/awards received.
  2. A list of publications.
  3. A document of at most five pages describing the nominee's work and placing it in context for importance. This document should outline the key mathematical contributions, their significance, and their impact on their respective field(s).
  4. Between two and four letters of recommendation.
